How to find a great business idea to change the world

Throughout June, we’ve talked about how you can pick yourself and start a new business. Even now, you can still make it work and there are some great ideas to help you hit the ground running. But what if you want to do something greater?

Our ideas in the last blog were focused on helping you. But if you’ve been inspired by people’s good spirits in the last couple of months, you might want to do something that gives back to your community. It’s admirable and a fantastic idea. Here’s why we think you should consider this angle and how you can start to make a difference.

Why help?

We’ve seen how many people need help in recent times. That never goes away. The answer to this question is simple: because someone needs to help. If you think you can be that person, then that’s great! We could always do with more social enterprises.

Where you put your focus is up to you. Some look to help on a smaller scale, doing what they can for the local community. This might be something like helping the elderly in your area or offering classes to disadvantaged kids.

Others go for a wider scale, maybe nationally or even internationally. This might focus on larger issues, such as poverty, hunger, or homelessness. Your initial business idea doesn’t even necessarily need to set out to fix the world’s ills from the start. You can work on building a steady cash flow and invest your profits into helping others, just like a social enterprise. How you choose to be philanthropic is up to you.

Where to start

They say you should always stick to what you know, and that’s a great idea when starting a new business. It just so happens to be one of our tips from last week’s blog. But sticking to what you know can mean more than the skills you have. You might have faced difficulties that you struggled with. And now you might be in a position to help others so they don’t have to suffer as you did.

There might have been a time in your life where you had so little money you could barely afford clothes. Maybe you could use this as inspiration to start a cheaper, yet well-produced, clothing line.

You might also take inspiration from your own experiences facing adversity. Then you can use your life as a starting point to address discrimination such as racism or homophobia. What matters is you’re passionate about it. Your businesses success comes from your drive to do more and an investment in the core issue at the heart of your business will push you to make it as great as it can be.

This is when you know you’ve found an amazing idea. When it works for you. When it isn’t even work at all. Sure, there’ll be times when it gets tough. You might even want to throw in the towel. But know that your idea will make a difference. You can make a difference.

At Big Hand, we’re always here to guide you on your business journey. It can be tough no matter what idea you pick, but we’ll stand by you through thick and thin. To find out more about what we can offer you, call us on 0161 327 2911.
