Don’t get left behind by your accountant

We always put emphasis on making sure your tax returns are filed on time and accurately. But what happens when you hire someone to do exactly that and they don’t deliver? Sadly, this is the case for many businesses every year who find out that their accountant has left things to the last minute.

It’s that time of year; the accountant finally gets round to filing your January tax return. Only it turns out you owe HMRC a lot of money. It’s a bit too close to the deadline to find a way of paying this massive sum. If only your accountant had filed your taxes back when you notified them and gave you more time to get your money together. This situation is all too common, but there are a few steps you can take to make sure you aren’t left behind by your accountant.

Do your research

Before hiring an accountant, it’s imperative that you do your research on who you are hiring. Are they good accountants? Their website will say they are because they want your business. But are they telling the truth?

The people you should be asking are past customers. You need to read their reviews to see how the accountants treated them and what kind of service they provided. Here you have the power of numbers. Sure, every company gets one or two bad reviews now and again. But if the bad reviews are stacking up, it’s likely these accountants are not the ones for you. On the other hand, if clients are singing their praises, it indicates that they can provide an excellent service and you may want to look deeper into their business.

Stay in control

For some of us, it may already be too late to choose a new accountant. In this case, we need to power through until after your tax return has been filed before you can find a new and improved accounting service. So, if this is you, you need to stay on top of things. It’s not your job to remind your accountant to do theirs, but desperate times may call for desperate measures. If it’s nearing the time you want your tax return filed by, you may need to give your accountant a nudge.

Call, email, and text them any chance you get. Let them know that you have hired them to do a job and you want it done in good time. While this is inconvenient for you, for the time being, it ensures you don’t have to pay any penalties that could arise from you missing deadlines and paying your taxes later than required. Once this is out of the way, it’s time to find a better accountant.

Getting knocked back by an accountant that you trusted to help your business stay on track can be frustrating and disheartening. But, finding an accountant that files your taxes on time and is a proactive source of knowledge is not out of reach.
